ABOUT

The Slash Pile is devoted to original slash recommendations of everything from fiction to art and webcomics.

RULES

1. Be respectful of other members and the authors whose works have been recommended.
2. When making a post to the community follow the posting format found below for tags and recommendations as well as the posting rules.
3. If a post does not meet all of the below requirements you will be asked to make the appropriate changes. However, if it is a repeat rec (something that has been recommended before) or a post that isn't allowed, you will be asked to remove it entirely.

ALLOWED

This community allows recommendations of original works pertaining to fictional QUILTBAG (Queer/Questioning, Undecided, Intersex, Lesbian, Transgender/Transsexual, Bisexual, Allied/Asexual, Gay/Genderqueer) people. This is not a community for fanfiction. This does include recommendations for published gay fiction, gay themed movies and webcomics, art, and websites that recommend these works. Discussion on this topic and other posts pertaining to original slash are welcome.

Posters are allowed to recommend their own work so long as these works are original gay fiction and have not been posted to the community before.

While rewrites of classics such as Greek myths and fairy tales are allowed, as is AU fanfiction, readers should be able to understand and enjoy these works without the reader having knowledge of the original work. That is, the story should read as original fiction.

Avoid spoilers or hide them by placing them under an lj-cut or hide it using the following html code:

Searches for the link to an original story are allowed, but please use the fic-search format, cutting for length/spoilers, and tag it with 'fic-search'. Be sure to check the archives using the descriptive tags to see if it has been recommended.

If you cannot find anything you'd like to read after searching through the archives, requests for recommendations are also allowed, with the use of the format given below.

We also allow discussion posts about QUILTBAG and QUILTBAG-reading/writing/drawing/... topics. Please check the dicussion tag for what has been discussed already.

Do not delete comments, your own or others'.

POSTING

Recommendations

Any recommendations pertaining to original slash can be posted here (art, fiction, etc.).

Each recommendation should go in a separate post. However, recommendations should only be posted once, even if there are multiple chapters. Making a post for each chapter of a story clogs up the community making it difficult to find other stories. Use the Tags Page to find out if a recommendation has been posted before by seeing whether the author has a tag, and checking which works have already been rec'd.

When posting, please use the following format:

Subject: The subject of your post should be the same as the title of the recommendation.

[Picture] Cover, banner or example page, or any picture that fits to the work. This part is optional. No hotlinking except if expressivly allowed, only use images that you are allowed to share, and make sure the picture fits into the post.
Title: The work's title.
Author: The work's author.
Format: What type of work this is (ex. Webcomic, Novel, Short Story, etc.)
Length: Approximate word count.
Status: WIP (unfinished) or Complete.
Rating: The work's maturity rating. The ratings we use can be found here.
Warnings: Warnings, if any. See the trigger list (triggers must be warned for). You are encouraged to warn for anything else you feel should be.
Link: A link to the work.
Summary: A summary of the work.

Review: Your feelings on the work. Writing out a full fledged review detailing what's good and bad about the story would be excellent although it is not required.

Not all of the above fields are required to be included. However, posters are urged to include as much information as possible. For your convenience the information above is provided below with formatting. Simply copy and paste what's in the textbox below and paste it to a journal entry to fill in.

Requests for Recommendations

1. This is not a community for fanworks. Please don't ask for fanfiction recommendations.
2. Check the Tags Page for past recs that might fit your needs.
3. Make a good faith effort not to repeat recent requests by checking
a. the Request Tag or,
b. thanks to lilith_lucifer, Request Post Master List or
c. the Delicious Account (How to search for fic there and more info).
4. Please tag your request with the appropriate tags - 'request' and appropriate +tags.

5. Requests are for general themes/ideas/dynamics/etc. and are allowed because they offer the community a collection of stories about an unusual topic/etc. Because of this, boil down your request to the core tropes/kinks/themes/etc. you'd like to see and try to keep them to a minimum of two or three as to not overload the request. Any further details should either be left out or put into the optional "Would also like" part. Adding more restrictions on what kind of stories you want reduces the acceptance of the request in the community as well as the number of stories recommended to you drastically.

6. When requesting, please use the following format:

Subject: [Request] main request
Requesting: A brief description of what you want.
Would also like: Additional features you would like in your request, but are not necessary.
Must not have: Any aspects of a story you specifically don't want, for example because they are very overused or triggery for you.

Similar Stories: Stories which you've already read/seen that fit your request.

Fic-searches

1. Please tag your fic-search with the appropriate tag: fic-search
2. When posting please use the following format:

Subject: [Fic search] Brief summary
Summary: more elaborate summary of the fic.
Other details: that you remember
Read at: site, if you recall

The more information you're able to include, the better!

TAGGING

Tagging for Recommendation Posts

Please use tags. Recommendations posted should be tagged with the following (in bold):

1. rec for all recommendations.

2. status: WIP or status: complete. WIP stands for work in progress and indicates the work is unfinished while 'Complete' indicates it has been finished.

3. Fiction, Art, or Webcomic. Works of fiction should be tagged as 'fiction', webcomics as 'webcomic', and art as 'art'. New tags may be created as other works are posted here. Published works for which you normally have to pay, are tagged with 'published'.

4. length: short story, length: novella, length: novel, or length: series. Other tags are available for misc. works such as webcomics. If not provided, they can be created. Please do not create multiple tags for the same works.

Short Story: Less than 20,000 words.
Novella: 20,000-40,000 words.
Novel: 40,000 or more words.
Series: Indicates the work is part of a series.

5. Author: AUTHOR NAME. This can be used to find fics by certain authors if an author has been recommended multiple times. This is also the easiest way to find out if someone has already written up a recommendation that you are thinking of writing. Users are unable to create their own tags, mods will add it for you should that be the case.

6. GENRE: _____. The blank should be filled in with one or more of the genres here.

7. Language. Works in languages other than English need to be tagged with the appropriate language. For example, if you want to share a work of fiction that's written in French, you would simply tag it 'language: French'. Works in English do not need to be tagged. A mod will create a new language tag upon request.

8. Rating: there are four ratings available - everyone, teen, mature, ultra mature.

rating: everyone - Appropriate for everyone. This means G/PG/little foul language/no more than implied sex.
rating: teen - Appropriate for anyone thirteen and up. This is sort of a catch-all between everyone and mature.
rating: mature - R-rated or equivalent - graphic violence, lots of graphic sex, et al.
rating: ultra mature - Content only appropriate for adults. Includes graphic rape, torture, guro, scat, vore, etc.

9. +tags: these are theme tags, an explanation can be found by hovering over each word (alternatively you can visit the gDoc):

+abuse, +age difference, +agents, +aliens, +amnesia, +ancient civilisation, +angels, +animals, +artists/writers, +assassins/hitmen, +bdsm, +bodyguards, +business men, +cheating, +college/university, +coming out, +criminals, +crossdressing, +demons, +detectives/police, +disability, +doctors/nurses, +drugs, +dub-con, +dystopia, +espionage, +established relationship, +fairies/fae, +femslash, +first time, +fluff, +food industry, +friendship, +gangsters, +geeks/nerds, +het, +high school, +holiday, +hurt/comfort, +incest, +jocks, +knights, +law/lawyers, +love/hate, +magic school, +magic users, +magical creatures, +marriage, +martial arts, +mental disorder, +military, +morning after, +mpreg, +music/bands, +non-con, +office, +paranormal, +parents/guardians, +parody, +pirates, +politics/politicians, +poly, +porn industry, +post-apocalypse, +powerplay, +prison, +psychics, +religion/spirituality, +rich guy/poor guy, +robots/ai, +royalty, +servants, +sex workers, +show business, +slavery, +slice of life, +sports, +steampunk/cyberpunk, +stockholm syndrome, +student/teacher, +superheroes, +teachers, +time travel, +transgender, +travel between worlds, +underage, +vampires, +war, +werecreatures, +western, and +zombies

Other Tags

1. Completion Alert. If a WIP was previously recommended, a post may be made to alert the community of its completion. Tag this post with 'completion alert' and nothing else.

2. Request. Use this tag if requesting recommendations.

3. Fic-Search. Use this tag if searching for a particular story.

Genres

This genre tagging system was created to allow a readers the ability to weed out what they feel like reading without having to go through all the recs. If a reader wants fantasy, drama/angst, etc., this will make those recs easier to access.

Genres should be tagged as follows: GENRE: _____. The blank should be filled in with one of the genres below (those are the the white headers) so that the tag reads like the following example: Genre: Contemporary. Users are allowed to apply as many tags as they deem necessary to a recommendation so long as they do not add unnecessary tags (labeling a story 'superhero' just because one character briefly reads a comic book, for example).

If you're still unsure where your story fits after going through the genres below you can either consult previously tagged entries tags (to see what sort of stories have been tagged a certain genre) or the moderator.

GENRES
CONTEMPORARYACTION/ADVENTURE
Works that are modern and don't quite fit elsewhere. These stories are typically centered around the ho-hum details of life and focus more on character and psychological depth than plot/action.Works focused on action and adventure that do not include magic or fit into other categories. These works may feature the following: sea adventures (pirates), ninjas, superheroes, treasure hunts, the military, wars, westerns.
SCIENCE FICTIONHISTORICAL
Works that deal with at least one of the following: the future (especially during or after the apocalypse), space (and its threats like meteors and aliens), technological/scientific advancements that dramatically alter the world -- typically in the future (time travel), and new/different social systems (dystopian/utopian societies). The primary difference between this genre and fantasy is the focus on science rather than the supernatural.Works set in specific historical eras, or in fictive worlds with similar historical eras. An action/adventure epic set in a Roman analog, a Victorian steampunk adventure, and a Regency romance would each qualify for this tag. Works with magic, however, should go under fantasy.
DARKCRIME
Works that focus on the darker elements of fiction such as death, violence, betrayal, or loss. Dark fiction often has a focus on horror, gore, and violence which differentiates it from angst and drama although some works may overlap.
Works dealing with crime, the people involved, and its consequences. This includes works that feature the following: crimes (organized or generalized), police, spies, gangs, prison, mysteries/detectives, or courtroom dramas/legal matters.
HUMORROMANCE
Works whose main aim is humor, whether through parody or the author's dominant approach to the story.Works where the main focus is the building up of/beginning of a relationship and/or problems characters face in a relationship. These works are typically lighthearted, have happy endings, and can be characterized as fluff.
TEENSDRAMA/ANGST
Works that take place in a school setting (high school, college, or otherwise) or involve school-aged characters dealing with issues that primarily affect teens. This includes coming out, summer break, after school activities, first love stories, or even abuse/drama.Works centered around emotionally distressing situations such as unreturned feelings, abuse, family or character death, illnesses, or other loss.
FAIRYTALE/MYTHOLOGICALFANTASY
Works that, like high/sword and sorcery fantasy, are set in invented worlds -- or are based on classic fairytales -- but are usually more lighthearted in tone and aim to teach a lesson. Mythological works, meanwhile, deal with cultures' myths (like the story of Hercules) or mythological figures (such as the fates).Works set in invented worlds that are generally serious in tone (as opposed to fairytales) and deal with a grand struggle (be it a personal battle or world-endangering matters) against supernatural, evil forces. Some typical characteristics of this genre include fantastical elements such as elves, fairies, dwarves, magic or sorcery, wizards or magicians, invented languages, and quests.
MODERN FANTASYEROTICA
Works set in modern times that have supernatural elements (vampires, psychic abilities, magic, etc.) or worlds/universes in or connected to our own.
Works solely (or mostly) focused on sex. PWPs (or porn without plot) would have this tag as well as works centered around sexual fetishes that don't fit into D/S.
