Title: Blood On The Ice

Author: Katriena Knights

Published/Free: Published

Length: Novel

Status: Complete

Rating: Mature

Link: Kobo

Summary:

The neutral zone is no place for a vampire.

A right wing for the Chicago Blackhawks, all Travis Payne wants is to see his name on the Stanley Cup. He certainly doesn’t expect to be attacked by a vampire on the eve of the Finals. But when he wakes up in the Warm Room of the Cook County Morgue, he knows his life will never be the same.

Review:

Yeah, I know. I know. I. Know. In my defence, I read this on a dare, but it turned out to be so much better than I expected. First of all, abandon logic all ye who enter. Don’t ask why vampires would be playing hockey. Don’t ask what they get out of it. Don’t think about the physics. Just, don’t son. Instead, sit back and enjoy the hell out of the weird.

Title: Hope Among the Deserted
Author: Xavier Mayne (http://xaviermayne.com)
Format: Short story
Published/Free: Free
Length: eBook is in 3 Acts. I think it’s more or less 5000 words.
Status: Complete
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Sex (not a real warning) | Disability trigger(?)
Link: Online on Literotica | Online on Nifty
ebook: alternative-mobi
Summary: A roadside explosion in Afghanistan takes Will’s ability to move his legs, but that’s not all he will lose along the way to finding a new life—and a new love.

Review: Sex in the story is a decoration. It’s grand but it doesn’t deter the main focus of the story. Not for me, anyway. The character chemistry is just well-done and the series connects to the author’s other free and published works without being dependent on them. I can’t believe something like this wasn’t recommended yet. This is a good read about a military man who finds love after all seems lost. Ideal for quick reads and those who seek nice endings.

I compiled the ebook when I liked it so much. It’s free distribution, so have at it. It’s under Creative Commons so it should be generally okay.

Summary: Snow and Noel are long-lost childhood friends who met up again in high school. Their friends can smell the bromance, so they decide to push them together faster. But as the two reach that point, things start to get complicated as they dig deeper into each other.

Review: It’s got a fluctuating art style at the start, but grew defined in time. The story’s nice, though, and is paced evenly. For me, anyway. It’s teasing a lot for two chapters.

Summary: Eric Bittle—former Georgia junior figure skating champion, vlogger extraordinaire, and amateur pâtissier—is starting his freshman year playing hockey at the prestigious Samwell University in Samwell, Massachusetts. And it’s basically nothing like co-ed club hockey back in the South. For one?

There’s checking.

Review: It's about hockey! And a pastry-baking southern boy! And his bros! Eric Bittle, aka Bitty cos hockey nicknames, is a former figure skater and current hockey player who joins his university's hockey team. It's more of an ensemble comic with a cast composed of the perfectionist team captain with daddy issues, a pair of defencemen who put the bro in bromance, a wise senior who rocks the flow and 'stache like they're going out of style, and a goalie who is maybe a little saner than most goalies (but only a little).

Summary: "I think you're my new best friend," Dan says, excitement beating out common sense, social filters, the need to play it cool.

"Hello Dan Riley," Marc says, his mouth twitching. "It is nice to meet you, new best friend."

Review: So this is a series of sports fic centered on Dan and Marc, two kids drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs--an NHL team from, you guessed it, Toronto. Not gonna lie, this fic does use a moderate amount of hockey lingo, but if you can ignore technical details for the storyline then you'll be all right. Or, y'know, if you're into hockey.

I like it precisely because it's a hockey fic with all the technical detail that entails. Marc is kind of a snobby Quebecois asshole while Dan is at times a dickhead by accident but at the end of the day they're both dudes who just want to play hockey (and win at it too). The series deals primarily with the relationship between Dan and Marc but as it's from Dan's PoV, you also get Dan's relationship with his family, his worries about being bumped down to the minor league, his freakout about being a gay professional athlete. Which is great cos I love it when characters have more going on in their lives than just the Love Interest. Over all the side characters are lively, the prose is well written and not overwhelming with descriptions, and the dialogue is easy to follow.

Sure, the tropes this fic explore isn't anything new and exciting nor is it subversive but it is a fun read. And given how few good hockey fics there are in original slash, I'm really happy about this one.

P.S if you have any questions about hockey I would like to redirect your questions to Tan and Roundaboutparker.

Summary:" Amazing what joy a little misunderstanding can bring ". There's not really any summary so you'll have to make do with my poor attempt. Jamie's sister gives him a pinch hickey which brings him to the notice of jock Sam Bricker. Sam had always thought he was straight but now can't help but notice the cute little nerd and, well, if anyone's going to be putting marks on him it will damn well be him!

My review: a cute little high school fluff piece that I enjoy. Pretty well written and nice to read to clear the palate after a reading a whole heap of angst.

Summary: Stuart has all this research to do this semester but the librarian won't help him because he's in a fraternity. A summary of the work.

Review: First of all, this is a sequel to The Lighthouse, but it does really stand alone (the main character of this story has a minor role in that story, the main characters in that story have minor roles in this one).
I am always amazed when I find such good writing and such well-written characters. They are well-rounded and the story does not need to resort to all sorts of extraordinary stuff happening to keep a very good flow and the reader's interest. It's one of those stories that bring a smile to my face when I receive an update notification in my inbox! I was surprised to see nothing by thenorthface had been recommended here before, so just a note to say that everything else is also very good!
I'm very bad at reviews, so just give it a chance! College, sports, fraternities, and not a lot of clichés, angst or drama, really!

* Needs by: thenorthface tag - I hope I did everything else all right! (I wasn't sure about making this a WIP since it's only missing the epilogue, but oh well, and the author is very good with updates!)

Summary: An interracial inter-clique fucking where we generally work on the theme of defying first impressions.

Review: Beautiful, full colour, porny webcomic. I can't stop looking at its lovely pages. It doesn't have any particular update schedule but so far it's been updating pretty frequently, sometimes multiple days in a row. The only drawback is that it's on y!gallery so you'll need to have an account in order to view it. Or the mature pages, anyway... I think it'd let you view the non-porny ones without an account. I can't say much about the broader plot just yet, but it's scripted in an amusing and believable way so I have high hopes for it.

stalkerTitle: Stalker
Author: R.D. Hero (RoughDraftHero)
Format: Novella
Length: 149 pp. (39,500 words)
Status: Complete
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Verges on dubious/nonconsent (both guys are new to BDSM and not good at establishing boundaries), Stalking (Abel is viewed as weird but harmless)
Link: LT3, Amazon, Oneshot Sequel (also includes a preview)
Summary: Eric Holden is the hottest football player at Las Juntas College—and the straightest, but Abel Epstein never got the memo. He's always one step behind his white knight, with camera in hand, and no one's ever gotten in his way until Eric's best friend, Pacer Daringer, cast a shadow over Abel's happily ever after. Now Pacer has the little stalker in his sights, and he's determined to teach Abel a lesson. What he didn't count on was that Abel might like it.

Review: I bought Stalker as soon as it came out because I've enjoyed RDH's free stories. If you like her work, then Stalker is definitely worth the $4.99. Abel and Pacer-John (no seriously, that's his name) have a messed up relationship. Abel has the social skills of an overripe banana and Pacer gets him in bed by taking advantage of Abel's shame over his stalking. Pacer soon realizes his attraction to Abel is serious, but he's still hung up on Eric. Pacer has to figure out how to prove to Abel that he's serious and Abel has to get over his obsession with Eric. Good characterization keeps what could be a disturbing story under control. Plus, it's pretty funny.

Hi, been awhile since I posted here! I'll just get right down to it I guess :)

Subject: s stated in the title, I'm looking for stories that feature either A) oddball couples or B) unrequited love that becomes requited.
Requesting: o specify, A) couples that are unique/unexpected B) all the messy, angsty feelings of someone hopelessly in love and hopeless to do anything about it.
Would also like: 'd really like realistic stories that will tug at my heart strings. And word count-wise, the longer the better ;)
Must not have: 'm pretty open to most things including mpreg or fanfic, and I'm fine with any rating. But please no bestiality or raunch. Also no femslash please!
Similar Stories: I don't think these fics exactly fit my request, but they're kinda close and good reads besides. The two that specifically come to mind are To Love A Loser by themilkbottle and Nerves by Zebbie. Both very popular stories that I'm sure you've all heard of :) And if not, I highly recommend reading them!

If you can think of any stories that just might fit into any of my request, please link them down below!

i really like this one, i discover this in accident when i'm just randomly looking into nifty, its quite interesting coz its the first time i've read slash that had fraternity in it. so i continue reading it thinking its normal college genre thing  and BAM, its actually  sci-fi. lols, i absolutely no idea since theres no any definition in nifty. and then i saw this again at gayauthors and its one of the most favorited stories so yeah, im recommending it cause its just awesome.

Title: Perspective

Author: leshea

Format: Short story

Length: 12,497 words

Status: Complete

Rating: Mature

Warnings: (from author) BDSM (heavier on the d/s, s/m than the b), coercive boys that humiliate other boys, mothers that embarrass their children, fathers that are jerks

Link: Aff.net, LJ, Fictionpress

Summary: (from author) Suburban strangeness; the photographer for the school paper talks into his crush, a jock from the swim team... It doesn't go as expected. [Assume they are eighteen, unless you want to pretend otherwise] Possibly a little bit of magic.

Review: Eric has always had a crush on his neighbor Brian Holland, who ignored him until his mother's death.  After, the boys begin an ill-advised sexual relationship.  This is an uncomfortable little story, but I enjoyed reading it.  It's also a nice twist on one of my favorite legends.  Be warned: the ending is bittersweet at best.  (But this is not a story you expect to have a happy ending.)

Title: Brains Over Brawn
Author: MaineBoyXY
Format: On-line novella.
Length: >40.000 words, 13 chapters.
Status: Complete.
Rating: Mature (NC-17).
Warnings: Various kinks, smut, sex, powerplay, bondage, humilitation, public exposure, orgasm denial, d/s, s/m, slavery... I'm sure you get the gist.
Link: http://nifty.guiltygroups.com/nifty/gay/authoritarian/brains-over-brawn/
Summary: A jock is caught cheating at a math test by a nerd. The nerd proves to be a crafty and very, very kinky extortioner.

Review: This is one of those incredibly intense (re-)reads, and I'm surprised that it hasn't been recced here before. (But it has been mentioned in comments, which is how I found it.)

Don't be fooled by the jock/nerd setup, this is NOT your typical sweet or angsty college story. "Brains Over Brawn" is a page-turner driven by inner revelations of sexual preferences, i.e. the sex-scenes ARE the story. But still, beneath all that sweaty movement runs an undercurrent of strong and heartbreaking emotion. (Yay!) The story also has a positive energy about it that makes it a joy to read. Highly recommended. :)

I don't think its grammar will offend anybody(, but I'm esl). But if you haven't already: pay attention to the tags and warnings!

Title: A Map of the Harbor Islands
Author: J.G. Hayes
Format: Novel
Status: Complete
Warnings: death of minor character
Link: http://www.amazon.com/Map-Harbor-Islands-J-Hayes/dp/1560235969/
Summary: This book charts the turbulent life courses of two South Boston friends, Danny O'Connor and Petey Harding, from their childhoods through their adult lives. 'Golden Boy' Petey has it all going for him - brains, charisma and his close friendship with Danny. Then, an accident on the baseball field changes everything. Petey wakes from a coma a different person, completely different from the boy Danny knew and loved. When Peter confesses that he is gay, it sends Danny on an odyssey he never dreamed could happen.

Review: What can I say about this book? A Map of the Harbor Islands is my favourite novel (LGBT or non LGBT related) period, and a brilliant work of literature. It is also an epic love story with a happy ending (it's hard to find a good love story, especially a gay love story, that is both realistic and grapples with life problems in a deep way that is also ultimately happy). The way the questioning of romantic love vs. platonic friendship is explored in the novel resonated with me in particular. Also, the general feelings of outsiderness and of not having a proper model to understand their experience or how to live their lives in a way fulfilling to them that all of the characters (gay, bisexual, and straight women) contend with in the story I think is very well depicted, and Hayes has a beautiful, poetic writing style. Definitely a book that deserves to be more widely read, and a good book for wintertime curl up on the couch reading. I've lost track of the number of times I've reread it, but still wish I could read it again for the first time.

Title: That's Life
Author: W.E.
Format: Novel
Length: no word count, but at least 40,000+
Status: WIP
Rating: R for sex
Warnings: brief scene of aborted dub-con
Link: http://www.nifty.org/nifty/gay/college/thats-life/
Summary: (mine, none provided by the author) In his first semester of college, Galen finds himself drifting away from his childhood best friend and now college roommate, the womanizing Kenny. Hiding the secret that he is gay, he distances himself further from his friends and family, but finds a distraction in the form of the gorgeous Thane in his still life art class.

Review: So I was going through old bookmarks of some of my favourite stories to reread and noticed that this one had not been rec'd properly here yet. It is both a coming of age story and a romance between two flawed characters. I appreciated the slow development and pacing of their story. Yes, this is a nifty story, so the writing is not perfectly polished. The characters might also seem exasperating at times, but overall I was struck by how real they and their actions and reactions are in this story, and how they grow up through the course of the narrative. Also, though this is technically an abandoned WIP, and there is no proper epilogue or conclusion to the narrative, none of the plot lines are left hanging and the love story is properly consummated in all senses of the word, so I would not be hesitant to read it on that account.

Title: The Girl for Me
Author: failte200
Format: Novella
Length: 78,000
Status: complete
Rating: M
Warning: kinda rape so... dub-con I think.
Link: Here

Summary: Straight jockboy Kevin thinks he has gay, cross-dressing Danny under his thumb. Kevin only likes girls. So... why does he keep thinking about her? Or him. Whatever.

Review: How was this story not rec'd yet?!? It was mentioned in passing, but not actually rec'd. I kept thinking to myself, "no, this story is too epic for it not to have been rec'd." But, surprise surprise, it hasn't. So what can I say about this story...

First off, the story is written in Kevin's POV and Kevin is an ass in this story. He's a bastard. He blackmails Danny, insults him, the works. I didn't like him at first. You can't help but think, "This guy is doing this on purpose." But as the story progresses you see that Kevin really doesn't do these things on purpose. He's just an idiot, but you fall in love with the idiot anyway because even though he's an ass, he's sincere and you can tell he cares, he just doesn't know how to show it. Then there's Danny who is confused about who he is, about what gender he is, and he's just struggling to make sense of it all. He is the proverbial china shop to Kevin's bull throughout the whole story, so you cheer for him pretty much the whole time. Two very powerful characters written in a way that will have you emotionally invested within the first chapter.

The plot is not an epic battle of love and hate and the struggles of blah blah something blah. Just two guys trying to make it work when one guy is a girl (pronouns and all) through half of the story. There's a couple of twist and turns in there that made this story even better, but I'm not telling you what they are. :) And the dialog! It's so snarky and witty and perfect! There's nothing I don't like about this story. Absolutely nothing.

SUMMARY

Author/Artist T. Spoon, that guy with the multiple personalities and dashing good looks, is pleased to bring you Presents, a collection of short stories and art with a cold, frosty twist. Whether you're looking for a new take on The Nutcracker, a story about the monster that lives in your toilet (better than it sounds, we promise), or a bit of wintery romance (the snark is optional), you'll get all of that and more between these pages.

ABOUT T. SPOON

In all seriousness, T. Spoon is made up of many talented authors and artists, and this anthology would not have been possible without them. So a great big thank you to Aeiouna, Ais, Ania, Cattails, Dusty_Dreams, G, ManicDak, Parker, Rae, and San.

Special thanks to Ania, G, Potatoe and Parker. Ania, G and Potatoe for whipping the incoherency out of the stories, and pruning away em dashes and semi-colons like a boss. And Parker for both her incredible patience (deadlines are more like suggestions to authors), and all the work she put into formatting this monstrosity.

Finally, this anthology is dedicated to the one and only [livejournal.com profile] tanrien. Thank you for all the work you do, for answering our questions with a smile (and at 2am too) and for your composure in the face of our tagging fails.
