Review: I just discovered this great story! Ajax is a law intern and bar tender who is just trying to live a normal, non-supernatural life but the death of his twin sister and an increasing amount of difficult-to-ignore paranormal activity encroaching into his daily life may be the end of that dream. Well written, a little humor, a little angst, and great characters, this is one I am bookmarking and definitely reading again.

Summary: Even high-class prostitute is better than this dullness I live in,” thought Julián before he left everything behind. Poor, uneducated and low class, the youth had all odds against him, but his beauty and determination to get his way were his greatest capital.

A simple job for an eccentric and aloof man could prove to be mankind’s greatest challenge.

Book trailer: http://tionne74.blogspot.mx/2015/04/lykos-video.html

Review: Tionne Roger’s novels, I believe, do not fit into the conventions of mainstream slash. Case in point, “The Forgotten Ones”, while it depicts a homosexual relationship and does contain a dash of homoerotica, is not a story about the romantic relationship between two male characters. Romance is not something you will find in this story, so you have been forewarned. On the other hand, what you will find is difficult to classify genre-wise.

If pressed, I would classify it as the compromise between sci-fi and modern fantasy, with a sobering dose of reality.

Under the premise that sci-fi fiction is, beyond its futuristic imagery, first and foremost a social commentary on the type of society our scientific and technological knowledge can build, I would dare to claim that, yes, “The Forgotten Ones” can be read as sci-fi. One of the major sources of conflict and tragedy in the story is brought about by current scientific developments.

And the knowledge that this is how we are nowadays using science to solve humanity’s problems, will make the nature of said conflict downright chilling.

But, how do the characters become involved in the conflict? What part do they play in it? Well, that falls more into the realm of modern fantasy.

What would have happened if vengeful gods had a say in human evolution?

The answer to that is something our main character, Julián (a boy from Madrid trying to figure what to do as part of a forsaken generation in a world suffering from the consequences of the current economic crisis), will discover when he accepts a job dog-sitting Lýkos, a temperamental wolf-dog.

As an unwitting Julián falls down the proverbial rabbit hole, what we will read is a story that digs far back into the obscure beginnings of humankind to draw a picture of a bleak future in the face of modern-day human hubris and indolence.

Summary:

The neutral zone is no place for a vampire.

A right wing for the Chicago Blackhawks, all Travis Payne wants is to see his name on the Stanley Cup. He certainly doesn’t expect to be attacked by a vampire on the eve of the Finals. But when he wakes up in the Warm Room of the Cook County Morgue, he knows his life will never be the same.

Review:

Yeah, I know. I know. I. Know. In my defence, I read this on a dare, but it turned out to be so much better than I expected. First of all, abandon logic all ye who enter. Don’t ask why vampires would be playing hockey. Don’t ask what they get out of it. Don’t think about the physics. Just, don’t son. Instead, sit back and enjoy the hell out of the weird.

Review: This story has zombies, vampires, fishermen, and friends who have a really odd concept of a gentle nudge. Port Carmilla, Australia, where all of this takes place, is an interesting bit of world-building. Een has more stories from Port Carmilla at their WordPress page. They also have a Tumblr account full of hilarious texts between the characters. Both are linked on the Smashwords author bio page.

Summary: A young citizen of the LG5 space colony 88HK3 meets a strange person, and a stranger fate.

Review: This one’s just getting started, but it’s already one of my favourites of this years new webcomics. It’s a black and white comic that is neat, well laid out, and doesn’t skimp on details. It’s sort of an interesting mix of sci fi, fantasy, and traditional Chinese culture. The little bit we’ve seen so far hints at a fascinating, complex world that I’m looking forward to learning more about. The main character is unreasonably cute and someone needs to hug him.

This is from the same author as Sharkteeth, which I also loved, so I was very excited when this started up. If anyone lost track of FastPuck when he lost his old account, you can now find him at dragonhusbands.

Title: El Goonish Shive
Author: Dan Shive
Format: Webcomic
Length: 109 chapters so far
Status: Wip
Rating: Teen
Warnings: Bullying, homophobia, forced outing of a gay character, sexism (all mainly on the part of minor characters and/or condemned by the story)
Link: http://egscomics.com/
Summary: A comic about a group of teenagers and the bizarre, often supernatural, situations that they face. Has a lot of focus on both the interpersonal relationships of the characters and on the supernatural abilities and troubles of themselves and those around them (with shapeshifting and “genderbends”/temporary physical sex transformations being two that receive a lot of focus, especially in earlier storylines).

Review: El Goonish Shive is a bit of an odd duck, and many readers may be put off by its extremely rough beginning. Not only is the comic short and poorly drawn at the beginning of the story, its storylines and characters (and the overall quality of the writing) leave much to be desired, and even once the story itself begins to evolve, the LGBTQ characters’ identities might not seem obvious at first, and the early focus on transformations may put some off.

However, if one can suffer through the story’s growing pains, they’ll be rewarded with a surprisingly complex modern fantasy-sci fi blend with a likeable and similarly complex cast of characters. These characters are teenagers, and not only do they have to deal with the relationship drama and struggles with identity that are characteristic of that age, they also have to deal with meddling immortals, developing powers, and misguided magic users, and the two often intersect in surprising ways.

Title: Avialae

Warnings: Author warns for blood and banging

Summary: Avialae is a webcomic about a gross bird boy and his nerdy wannabe ornithologist neighbor who helps him out during the painful and bloody process of growing wings.

Review: [Rec’d on Western Yaoi forum] Avialae by Lucid is just your typical coming-of-age story about a boy getting his wings. Because of course it is. Gannet is a gay high school student dealing with isolation, homophobia, and an annoying neighbor — the nerdish straight-arrow, Bailey. Then the next day, he is a guy with wings sprouting painfully out of his back with no one to help him but his annoying, nerdish neighbor, Bailey. Arguments, denial, and no-name sandwich spreads ensue.

It’s twisted in all the right ways.

Summary: Ned’s a normal guy. All he wants is a normal life, with a normal job, and a normal wife, in the normal universe where those with soul mates are born with a red string.

Review: [Rec’d on Western Yaoi forum] Tied in Red by Torakodragon is a relatively young comic; it just started this summer. So far, though, it has been a very sweet story. Ned and Doug live in a universe where everyone who has a soul mate is born with a red string tied to his-or-her finger. Eventually this string will simply join with its mate, and the two people attached to those strings will become attached to each other for one week. There is even a government agency tasked with assisting the tied.

The author insists that it is “horribly drawn,” but the art — while not fancy — is pleasant and attractive. The characters, even the secondary ones, are interesting and likable. As a whole, the comic just makes me smile.

Updates sporadically.

Warnings: Nothing more extreme than sex.
Link: AO3 | M/M Romance Group website
Summary: Retired combat medic Craig Standish is looking forward to time in his family home on Long Island while starting his life as a civilian. One morning, on a walk in West Hills County Park, he happens upon the most unlikely of things: a very beautiful, very naked young man who can’t remember who he is or how he ended up under a pile of leaves in the woods. What else can Craig do but take the young man home and try to help him regain his memory?

He never expects that the process requires a cat, lots of coffee, and a mountain of paper - and all too little in the way of clothes.

Review: This is a very, very good story and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy and scifi stuff. There’s a lot of scifi type tech talk that kind of intertwines with magic, and the authors pull it all off beautifully. The story makes good use of a small cast and limited locations to reveal through conversation and actions a complex, detailed world without ever needing to pause to info dump.

Ultimately, though, it’s about the two main characters finding what each of them needs in the other. I loved the two main characters, especially Nithael, a socially awkward, easily distracted genius confused by the world around him. Craig appears at first to be set to play the ‘normal’ guy Nithael is bounced off of, but secrets of his own are revealed as the story progresses.

There were almost no typos or grammar issues and the story was engaging and well structured. This would be a quality read for a published book, but for a free story it’s an especially exceptional treat.

Title: Concession
Author: Immelmann
Format: Webcomic
Length: 21 chapters/ ~376 pgs
Status: Complete
Rating: Ultra Mature. Very, very ultra mature.
Warnings: Read at your own risk. The list of what Concession DOESN’T need a warning for is probably easier come up with… But I can’t come up with anything on it right now. For the basic warnings, we’ll go with sex (of all kinds), violence (in all its forms), controversial concepts and inappropriate subject matter. And rape, because that warning does always need to be typed out.
Link: http://concessioncomic.com/
Summary: Concession is a furry webcomic for mature audiences. It is a crazy and insane collection of sexy, dramatic, and humerous adventures of the crew of a move theatre. It won the 2009 Ursa Major Award for Best Anthropomorphic Graphic Story. It’s contents focus on sexuality (most of the characters are bisexual or homosexual) and dark themes of violence.

Review: Concession is a fun romp, starting with a gag a day comic format with some good, but rough, artwork. The art improves significantly after Immy starts using a tablet, and improves gradually over time, as most webcomics do. The gag a day format evolves rather quickly into serious drama and angst, and the comic transforms into something spectacular. Immy does a great job following all of his characters lives, which is seriously impressive considering the sheer number of recurring characters in the comic. This is one of a very few number of webcomics I’ve ever run across that attempts world building to this level, and Immy is a master at it.

1. Concession is touted by Immelmann as a furry webcomic. It comes across to me (not a furry) as no different from any other work involving anthro characters (think Two Kinds or Slightly Damned) You don’t have to understand flurries to enjoy this comic.
2. This is mostly m/m, but not restricted to m/m. I’d call it ‘various’, and bear in mind that the characters aren’t drawn with genitalia other than breasts, usually, so even when sex is depicted, you probably can’t see the naughty bits.

Format: Comic

Length: Series
Rating: Teen
Link: Marvel Online Shop, Comixology, or drop in at your nearest comic book store
Summary: Legacy isn't a dirty word? but it's an irrelevant one. It's not important what their parents did. It matters what they do. Someone has to save the world. Wiccan, Hulkling and Hawkeye unite with Loki, Marvel Boy and Ms. America to do just that! As a figure from Loki's past emerges, Wiccan makes a horrible mistake that comes back to bite everyone on their communal posteriors. Fight scenes! Fake IDs! And plentiful feels! (aka "meaningful emotional character beats" for people who aren't on tumblr.) Young Avengers is as NOW! as the air in your lungs, and twice as vital. Hyperbole is the BEST! THING! EVER!

Review: In the Marvel universe, there is this thing about superheroes not having teenage sidekicks because it's dangerous and they happen to like having kids alive and well. The Young Avengers are the teenagers that went, "okay cool, we won't be sidekicks. We'll become superheroes instead."

Format: Novel
Length: 97k

Warnings: References to a past abusive relationship. There are more warnings in the notes at the end of the story if you're wary, but there's nothing too major and they're pretty spoilery.

Summary: Nick Vargas is a technopath with a shady past and plenty of baggage. After walking away from a life of crime and a destructive relationship, all he wants to do is stay out of trouble and mind his own business on the edges of the superhuman community. All is well until superhero wannabee Leo Harding enters his life and everything takes a turn for the complicated. Nick finds himself dragged back into the world he thought he’d managed to leave behind, and it turns out Leo has a few secrets of his own.

Review: This is a truly excellent story and I highly recommend it. It has the kind of pacing you get when a writer really knows what they're doing, where back story and world building are dispensed without pausing the narrative with huge info dumps and every scene moves the plot forward. I really loved all the magic and the characters felt well rounded and carefully developed. If you like superheroes, magic, or just well written original slash, I suggest you take a look at this one.

Title: Rescuing James
Author: Aska J Naiman
Format: Novel
Length: 47k
Status: Complete
Rating: Adult
Warnings: Dubcon, shifters, werewolves, homophobic society
Link: Published on smashwords, Amazon. Now also on nook and on Scribd.
Summary: James has left behind the ranch and his werebear pack for the big city. He wants to be more than his instincts. He wants more of life than the peace of the mountains broken only by the exhilaration of the hunt. But when a lost were, just bitten, crosses his path, he realises that there is nowhere he can escape his wildest side.

This man could enough for man and bear, if he wants to be.

Review:
The MC, James, was born a werebear in a werebear family, who for obvious reasons lives in the countryside. A few years before the story starts James left them to go to college and hasn’t been back since for fear that he won’t be able to leave again. So he’s stuck in the city, with a job he loves and little else and hasn’t transformed into a bear in a good long while, which is making him a bit irritable. Cue this were kid showing up, no idea what kind of were he is, he has apparently survived by chance since he was bitten and he could smell James’ scent and knew he was a were too.

James gets him off the street STAT because bitten shifters can be dangerous if not trained properly (just imagine tomorrow you get the ability to turn into a lion, you wouldn’t know what to do with the claws or the fact that you want to eat your pets now). He doesn’t really like it when his mom tells him the only solution is to form a psychic bond with the guy and let him see how James controls his own animal self because last time James did something like that, it did not end that well.

James isn’t happy about the invasion of his mind, the guy isn’t happy about the sex necessary to get it done (here is where the con is dubious, but more in a “aliens made them do it” way.) There’s also the fact that James needs to find the were who bit his new lover and make sure he’s taken care of by his pack so he doesn´t try and kill/bite more people and that his lover is not happy to get his ex in trouble for a number of reasons.

Things that might appeal: Hurt/comfort, animal transformations, possessiveness, some D/s dynamics in the bedroom only, psychic bonds, knotting.

While the book is in pre-order, I will be giving out some free copies (in shameless hope of reviews ;p). Goodreads reviews are good, for example.

Title: In the Flesh
Format: Series
Length: Around 50 min each episode
Status: On-going, 2 seasons
Rating: Teen? with mature elements (not sure...)
Warnings: Suicide (mention of & visible scars), death
Link: You can find them online if you search. It's a British show so I don't believe it's airing in the US yet. I saw some uploaded with Spanish subtitles on Youtube as well.

Summary: From IMDB: Four years after the Rising, the government starts to rehabilitate the Undead back into the society including teenager Kieren Walker, who returns home to his small Lancashire village to face a hostile reception as well as his own demons.

Review: I just finished all the episodes two days ago so I'm at a point where I'm reallyreally into it as it's so fresh in my mind. I honestly didn't expect to like this. The gifs I'd seem on tumblr looked really weird (their eyes!).  But from the first episode I became hooked (and stayed up wayyy too late when I had to be up for work).

I love almost all the characters (some you hate because you're supposed to!) And what I really like is that we get a lot of backstory for these characters (the main cast and even some minor ones), a lot of emotion and depth from the PDS (Partially deceased syndrome) sufferers and from their families. There's a lot of issues/discrimination. Because of what they did before they were rehabilitated and medicated to be more normal, and not rabid zombies who go around eating people, the backlash is severe. Not many accept them, many think they're monsters. Their rights are not equal to the living.

If you're okay with zombie stuff you might like this. The first season only has three episodes, and the second only 6 but I'm hoping they don't cancel it and hope season 3 will be longer.

Review: I read this story a while ago and it is nothing short of amazing, a true gem of wattpad books. The two main characters are believable and have undeniable chemistry.
