Warnings: Master/Slave but nothing R rated.
Link: Under the Dragon's Claw; WIP Sequel: When the Plum Blossoms Bloom
Summary: Captain Wei Shun's offer of marriage to Cheng Lan was humiliatingly rejected in front of all members of the royal court. That was ten years ago. Now, the king has given a newly victorious General Wei Shun a special reward for his military service - a slave named Cheng Lan. Lan was born to be a high ranking scholar-official within the king's court. When accusations of treason destroy his family and he is reduced to slavery, his last hope is a childhood friend who's love he once scorned.

Shun's success and popularity has seen him more than one jealous rival in court. The events that lead to Lan's family's arrest and execution are fast catching up with him. They will need to negotiate the treachery of the royal court together - if they are to survive.

Review:
I love stories in historical settings. It's always refreshing to see one not set in the West (Europe/America) but in the East (China). This story is not very hardcore. It has a Master/Slave set up but no BDSM setting, the romance is pretty sweet. I like the interplay between the characters. You'd assume a character would act a certain way due to past issues but everyone seems pretty mature. I also like the political setting, it's interesting and doesn't go into too much cliche territory.
The first story is complete and the sequel is under way. A nice interesting fic to check out.

Length: 67k

Warnings: Explicit smut, swearing, and violence (from author)
Summary: Seymour is an expert in killing time, and wants nothing more than to hang out with his cat, eat chalk, and occasionally fantasise about dirty sex with his bastard ex-boyfriend. Ira is an expert in killing people, and all he wants is Seymour.
Review: This story is weird, the characters are weird and I can’t help but love them! I can’t give them justice by trying to explain them. All I can say is that the characters and the story is weird and disturbing in the best possible way. Oh, and the writing is great! Writing is really important for me when I read, and I have nothing to complain about in this one.

Title: Men+Monsters
Author: Aero Zero
Format: Webcomic
Published/Free: Free
Length: 23 pages so far [26 pages per chapter]
Status: Wip
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Monster sex (teratophilia)
Link: Explicit: men-plus-monsters-nsfw.tumblr.com | Original/censored version: http://men-monsters.com
Summary: The adventures of a teratophile human knight, his sarcastic monster lover, and their robotic companion as they fight deadly creatures and have sexy encounters around the world together.

Chapter 1 summary: When a stoic captain’s forbidden relationship with a human-loving monster is revealed, they are sentenced to death, and it’s to be carried out after their next mission - should they return with the monster. Captain’s robot companion argues to stay safe in their kingdom and abandon his beloved monster, an option captain is vehemently against. Bound by loyalties to their kingdom and each other, a variety of tensions rise as they get closer to the end of their mission, when they must decide their fate.

Despite the first chapter’s themes, it’s lighthearted in tone with some humor and lots of fighting and smut! It’s a colorful story that updates Fridays and Sundays.

Review: This is my comic, so I can’t review it, haha! Go ahead and give me a review if you’d like <3

Mod comments: Sure thing! I was actually planning on reccing this one myself, anyway. This comic is fun, funny, and sexy. I want to respond to every page with terrible innuendo.

The comic pages are in beautiful full colour, and I especially love the way Aero draws backgrounds with bright, blended colours and lineless art that can turn things as simple as trees and rocks and rain into something absolutely gorgeous. There are frequent action scenes, both sexual and violent, which show off Aero’s ability to pose her characters in whatever way the scene requires without anything ever looking awkward or out of proportion.

The whole thing is neatly finished, from the layout of the site to the grammar and flow of the text to the quality of the art. It’s one of my very favourite new webcomics and I highly recommend it.

Title: A Love Story Starring My Dead Best Friend
Author: Emily Horner
Format: Novel
Published/Free: Published
Length: 272 pages
Status: Complete
Rating: Teen
Warnings: Homophobia, bullying, car accidents.
Link: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6725896-a-love-story-starring-my-dead-best-friend
Summary: For months, Cass Meyer has heard her best friend Julia, a wannabe Broadway composer, whispering about a top-secret project. Then Julia is killed in a sudden car accident, and while Cass is still reeling from her death, Julia’s boyfriend and her other drama friends make it their mission to bring to fruition the nearly-completed secret project: a musical about an orphaned ninja princess entitled Totally Sweet Ninja Death Squad.

Cass isn’t one of the drama people. She doesn’t feel at home with Julia’s drama friends, and she doesn’t see a place for her in the play. Things only get worse when she finds out that Heather Galloway, the girl who made her miserable all through middle school, has been cast as the ninja princess.

Cass can’t take a summer of swallowing her pride and painting sets, so she decides to follow her original plan for a cross-country road trip with Julia. Even if she has a touring bicycle instead of a driver’s license, and even if Julia’s ashes are coming along in Tupperware.

Totally Sweet Ninja Death Squad is a story about friendship. About love. About traveling a thousand miles just to find yourself. About making peace with the past, and making sense of it. And it’s a story about the bloodiest high school musical one quiet suburb has ever seen.

Review: This book started really strongly for me and then sort of petered out, but I still enjoyed it a lot. It’s definitely a coming of age story, and it has a lot of other characters’ coming of age stories packed in, too. It has a lot of really great character moments, and it has quite a few interesting things about religion that is non-committal about making a point - the protagonist is Quaker, and homosexuality is fine with her family while wearing makeup is not; her love interest is Catholic, who has a complicated relationship with her faith; her dead best friend was Christian and tried to mediate between her pastor and a gay friend after he came out. I think the book should probably have been longer to develop everything properly, but it had genuine emotional beats and the protagonist was immensely likeable even when she was being kind of a jerk.

Length: 30 pages
Status: Complete
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Slavery (serfdom, if you want to nit-pick)

Summary: Ethan must fight in a mediaeval tournament in order to escape a life of serfdom. Fitz is the noble that he must defeat in the final round, but Ethan’s feelings for Fitz are distracting, to say the least.

Review: It’s okay, if you like hot, sweaty guys wrestling in the mud, their muscled bodies pressed together as they grapple for dominance. If you’re really into the triumphant hero being bathed by the defeated warrior — his aches and bruises soothed under the assured touch of his former rival — this might be the story for you.

Title: Carmilla
Author: VervegirlTV
Format: Web Serial
Length: Season 1 - 36 episodes
Status: Complete.
Link: Carmilla
Summary: The webseries Carmilla is a YouTube series based on the novella, told from the perspective of Laura - a freshman in university who is investigating the disappearance of her roommate. Suddenly, she is assigned a new roommate - a broody girl named Carmilla. (Taken from Wikipedia)

Review: I myself am not much for F/F. I rarely like the representations of women in media, so I tend to avoid. I do have some fandom F/F OTP's in my head (where the canon almost but not quite pushes my fanon F/F OTP), but very rarely do I find a good F/F series to follow (could be cause I don't go out of my way to search lol).

I recently joined tumblr, and a friend of mine kept posting all these photosets of Carmilla which I actually found kind of hot. I decided to try this series out, and I can't even put into words my feels! It's a female centric series with a lot of strong and diverse female characters, the characters are engaging and relatable, there is a legit love triangle between females. Excellent representation of sexuality and potrayal of women. I'm surprised no one in TSP has recced it so far! (as far as I can tell). It's a series which balances comedy and darkness very deftly.

I'm not the best reviewer, but I strongly urge everyone to give this series a try!

This was the reason and pretense to enslave every magician, above all, the yorasai (‘demons’ in human language), a race with strong magical abilities. An enchanted collar and the fitting ring make it possible. This is an story about a young nobleman and his demon bodyguard. Title: Young Avengers Vol 2
Author: Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie
Format: Comic
Status: Complete
Length: Series
Rating: Teen
Link: Marvel Online Shop, Comixology, or drop in at your nearest comic book store
Summary: Legacy isn't a dirty word? but it's an irrelevant one. It's not important what their parents did. It matters what they do. Someone has to save the world. Wiccan, Hulkling and Hawkeye unite with Loki, Marvel Boy and Ms. America to do just that! As a figure from Loki's past emerges, Wiccan makes a horrible mistake that comes back to bite everyone on their communal posteriors. Fight scenes! Fake IDs! And plentiful feels! (aka "meaningful emotional character beats" for people who aren't on tumblr.) Young Avengers is as NOW! as the air in your lungs, and twice as vital. Hyperbole is the BEST! THING! EVER!

Review: In the Marvel universe, there is this thing about superheroes not having teenage sidekicks because it's dangerous and they happen to like having kids alive and well. The Young Avengers are the teenagers that went, "okay cool, we won't be sidekicks. We'll become superheroes instead."

Title: The Whateley Academy Universe
Author: Various
Format: Various
Length: Episodes vary but we are approaching 300 stories avg 21k words ea (total canon word count in excess of 6.2 million words)
Status: Wip
Rating: Teen mostly, a handful would need a Mature rating, one or two may require an Ultra Mature rating. These are blocked on our site by a warning page to prevent accidentally stumbling into them without warning.
Warnings: While most of the Universe stories are fairly light-hearted and typical in tone for a super-hero academy; the WU does include Lovecraftian Mythos style horror and deals with real world issues of sex, rape, transgender and other alternative lifestyle situations. People with specific trigger issues will be able to read a significant majority of stories with no difficulties… but may wish to communicate with authors and fans on our forums for specific arcs to avoid. There is not, currently, any method in place to mark these stories separate from the rest.
Summary: In this story universe, superheroes first appeared a little before World War I. Mutants and other empowered individuals began to appear more and more often as the century rolled on. By the sixties, a group of heroes and villains came together to create a safe, neutral high school where newly-emerged mutants could learn to control their powers. Mutations typically become evident at around puberty, often signaled by a change in eye color and other physical changes. Some mutants became fantastically beautiful. Some became hideous. Some changed sex. Many were rejected by their families and friends. To protect these children, ease their transition, ensure a future legacy for “their kind,” and guard society against rampaging adolescent godlings, this group of heroes and villains created a secret boarding school covering all four years of American high school. On the surface, this is a normal private boarding school of around 650 students, nestled in the remote hills of New Hampshire. It is known as “Whateley Academy.” Unknown to the world at large, this school trains the future leaders of the world – both heroes and villains. And while the school attempts to maintain a strict neutrality on the good vs. evil issue, the individual students have no such requirement.
Review: As part of the canon author ‘cabal’ I am biased; however there is no question that the WU has an incredible level of world history and background depth available for its protagonist teenagers to explore. The power sets are well thought out and far more limited than those in traditional comic books. We have an active reader community, who participate regularly in discussions on our forums, and more than a few of our own fan fiction writers; some of who have been co-opted over the years into the canon roster due to the quality of their work.

Status: Complete
Rating: NC-17

Summary: A fast ship, a good crew, a treasure, a Clan to lead -- that's all Arthur Pendragon has ever wanted. He sits on the Council, he supports his father's kingship, and he keeps an eye on the Imperial Conglomerate when they come too close to Pirate space. One day the Conglomerate infiltrates the Clans and poisons the King. Arthur must search for a cure to keep his father alive and the Clans from civil war.

An escape route, a sharp knife, a target, the shadows at his command -- that's all Merlin has ever needed. He fulfills his assignments, he uses the Sterling to sustain his once-royal House in their exile, and wages a private war against the Imperial Conglomerate. When he learns of an elaborate plot to assassinate him, Merlin does the opposite of what's expected. He flees onto a Pirate ship.

There's a saying among the Pirates: that one's fate is written in the stars. Destiny will always set to rights what has been made wrong.

Arthur and Merlin know that they were meant for the other from the moment they meet. They can feel it from across the galaxies separating them. Nothing can stop them from being together or from fulfilling an ancient prophecy.

Review: This is fan fiction based on the Arthurian legend/BBC's Merlin (take your pick) but it's so completely AU that the only thing even remotely similar is the names of the characters. Before you click that back button I seriously urge you to give this story a try. It's phenomenal. I don't even like space operas (at all) but this story was recommended to me so many times that I ended up caving in. I'm so very glad I did. The world building in this story is absolutely amazing. It's detailed and intricate enough to make you fall in love with the world created but not dense enough to make the eyes of those who aren't huge sci-fi fans (like me) glaze over.

The characters are all intriguing, the plot is gripping, the dialog is superb, and the relationship between Merlin and Arthur--the main characters--is just exquisite. The entire story is gripping and intense and honestly, a complete page-turner. Footloose is such an amazing writer and storyteller and it really shows in this story.

There aren't many sex scenes (yay!), but the few there are smoking hot. I tend to skim over smut because after a while it gets so repetitive/mundane. Not in this story. The sex between the protagonists is seriously panty-wetting/boner-popping intense.

And then there's the art. Holy crap, the art. The art is just as amazing as the story. Mushroomtale is such an incredible artist and the pieces she created for this story compliment it so well. They are absolutely, mind-blowing-ly fantastic.

Between the writer and the artist, they've created an absolute epic. Words cannot describe how charmed I am by this story. So give it a shot. Yes, it's fan fiction, but like I said it's so completely AU that it might as well be an original story.

*Also, the author has created other stories (like this Military AU) that I've heard are just as spectacular. I haven't gotten around to reading most of them yet, but I will!

Title: Missing Monday
Author: Elle Skinner
Format: webcomic
Length: 14 page
Status: WIP
Rating: Everyone
Warnings: none
Link: First Page
Summary: Missing Monday is a coming of age webcomic that follows Foyle Leaf and her growing relationship with Monday Rhodes, a girl from another world who appears one day through a doorway in an abandoned clocktower.

Review: This is really cute, really well drawn, and very imaginative. I always try to link what I feel in reviews to things that most people can relate to and this is like eating homemade sugar cookies right off of the tray. Foyle is a sassy, hard working girl with a love of antiques, watches and general tinkering with things. You don't really get to know much about Monday, not yet at least, but on the surface she has a wide eyed innocence with some secrets buried deeper in her personality. The world that the artist creates (because I'm a sucker for some good world building) is really nicely done. She tells the story in a way that lets you discover little facts, and things without anyone, character or artist, telling you about it. I get the sense that this will be a really grand type of adventure, fantasy-ish story because even though there's a fair amount of pages the story really is just getting started.

Another thing that I really like, and that I encounter so rarely in the slash and femslash community, is that this is a mixed race webcomic. It occurred to me, as I was coming up with things to say about why this comic stands out to me and why others should read it, that there aren't many mixed race anything out there. Maybe there is and I'm the one who hasn't been looking all that hard (and I haven't since race isn't a filter I put content through when I'm choosing), but I can only think of maybe five LGBT centered stories, comics, or videos where the relationship happened between people of mixed races that I've watched ever. Well, excluding sci-fi and fantasy races. Sorry, this wasn't supposed to be a discussion post! I just thought that it was a nice little bonus that Foyle is quite dark skinned with really short black hair and Monday is all blond hair and baby blue eyes with pale skin.

Needs author tag, thank you!

Title: Carnations' Wake
Authors: [livejournal.com profile] scribblestorm and [livejournal.com profile] transient_words
Rating: teen; might shift to mature later.
Format: Novel
Status: WIP
Word-count: 75,200+ so far
Summary:The last thing a taciturn assassin expects to find in the lonely hills of rural Scotland is a coffin in the ruins of a castle, housing a sleeping knight. Nor does he expect that one good deed will throw his life into jeopardy, and that his fate will be intertwined in a seven hundred year-old tale of valor and redemption.
Warnings: violence and strong language

The story thus far: On a job nearly gone awry, Jude Macmillian, assassin for hire, comes upon Liam Blackwood, a young man who not only professes to know Jude (and inexplicably hint at more, but also claims to be a knight from 700 years ago. Unbeknownst to them, a nameless Organization has been operating in the shadows: its leaders believe Liam's awakening is the first sign heralding the coming resurrection of a disgraced King, and the end of the world as we know it.

chapter 12:Home was an apartment thousands of miles away: piles of blankets and the glow of the television, soft carpets and a sleeping bag on the floor. 'Home' was warm and familiar and comforting. This was none of those, and suddenly he couldn't wait to be anywhere else but here.[[ on fictionpress or AO3 ]]

Review: I already posted here once before while this story was in its early stages re: feedback, and while I've joined a very helpful and warm community on FictionPress, we would also like to have more feedback from people who regularly read slash in order to improve. Concrit is more than appreciated. I'm also willing to enter review trades (PM for that <3).

Review: It's no secret that Katica Locke is one of my absolute favourite writers ever. Title: The Soldier and His Servant
Author: Wanda Walker

Length: 130,000+
Status: Book One complete, with a WIP continuation, Scorpion Sands.
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Suicidal idealation, physical assault, graphic depictions of violence, brief sort of dub-con.

Read on FictionPress or over at AO3

Summary: Raheed is bhanak, a "slave soldier" who was bought, educated, and trained by the Mulli empire. When stationed in a rural town, he befriends a deaf beggar boy, Asan. A fierce yet complicated bond grows between them, though neither sees it the same way as the other. Soon, it is not just their loyalties to a nation that is tested, but also their loyalty to each other.

Review:  This story is a rare gem that has a number of features that make it wonderfully unique.

For starters, it takes place in a beautifully rich and detailed pseudo-Middle Eastern setting, rather than the more commonly seen pseudo-European medieval time-period. The writing is excellent and draws you in so much that you can almost smell the desert sand. The characters, one of whom is deaf, are very well built; they are complicated and flawed, but develop, and even the minor characters hold interest.

I will point out that if you’re looking for a quick romance where the main characters lock eyes then immediately ride off into the sunset together then this is not it. The story has a very engaging plot and takes place over a long period of time. It also features het romances.

If you’re going to start reading, make sure you have plenty of time on your hands because you’re not going to stop. The author updates with impressive frequency and also has some excellent art work and pictures of the characters on her tumblr.

Title: Princess Princess

Format: Webcomic
Length: 44pg
Status: Complete
Rating: Everyone
Warnings: None

Summary: Amira and Sadie are two very different princesses who decide to take their happily ever after into their own hands. Princess Princess was my first attempt at a longer comic narrative, and I hope one that depicts different kinds of female strength and relationships.

Review: There's lots to love about this webcomic including the art, concept, and its light humor. Though the dialogue is brief, it fits the storyline and complements the stylized art very well. The coloring is, well, colorful, and girly, but is also cohesive, coherent to the moment, and not overwhelming. The story contributes good commentary regarding gender, gender roles/politics, and the way that female characters are treated and act in stories. There's also enough background on the characters for you to get attached and feel very good when they succeed.
